Sebaceous breast cancer is essentially a skin cancer. In this case, the cancer is growing on the skin of the breast. Sebaceous breast carcinoma is not usually related to the conventional ductal carcinomas characteristic of breast cancer. So, sebaceous cancer is a distinctive type of breast cancer that is characterized by unequivocal morphologic differentiation towards sebaceous epithelium or sebocytes. Sebocytes are epithelial cells that originate from a basal cell layer at the periphery of the gland.

However, it is also possible for women to have an invasive ductal carcinoma that has many features, or a certain percentage of the tumor, that has commonalities with sebaceous gland carcinomas of the skin.

Sebaceous breast cancer is VERY rare. I just want to let you know that I have created a newer version of this page with more up-to-date information on rare types of breast cancer.

However, this page still has great material, and I would still recommend on using it as well. These types of cancers will often contain many lobules and nests of clear cells that closely resemble the sebaceous glands of the skin. This type of breast cancer can also sometimes develop within an intraductal breast papilloma. Indeed, they actually most commonly develop in and around the eyelids.

If a sebaceous cancer of the breast show multicentricity, poor differentiation and infiltrative growth, then the tumor may have a worse prognosis. A sebaceous carcinoma of the breast will usually present as a small mass. However, there is always a risk that doctors will dismiss the lesion as something benign , like a common skin lesion. This is because sebaceous breast cancers are not always easy to see on a screening mammogram either.

A mammogram will usually reveal pleomorphic calcifications, and these lesions are often well circumscribed. The cytoplasm is usually coarsely vacuolated, and abundant lipid droplets can often be identified in the cytoplasm with oil-red-O staining.

The clear cells of sebaceous carcinoma of the breast tend to be negative with alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff and staining. The atypical epithelial tumor cells tend to test positive for the epithelial membrane antigen, human milk fat globules subclass 1, human milk fat globules subclass 2 and Leu M1.

Sebaceous breast carcinomas are also frequently reactive for Cam 5. This can be an important means of differentiating sebaceous gland breast carcinomas from squamous cell breast carcinomas and breast basal cell carcinomas. Sebaceous carcinoma of the breast is quite often positive for cytokeratin , but not for vimentin and carcinoembryonic antigen.

Medics and specialists do not know a great deal about sebaceous carcinomas of the breast because it is so very rare. However, if we take the example of a skin sebaceous carcinoma, then clearly, sebaceous breast carcinoma should be considered aggressive cancer. Sebaceous cell breast tumors will likely exhibit an aggressive clinical course, with a significant tendency for both local recurrence and distant metastasis.

Surgeons will normally completely excise a sebaceous carcinoma of the breast. A modified mastectomy is sometimes necessary, and depending on the situation an axillary lymph node dissection might be prudent.

Follow-up should be frequent in order to look for possible metastasis. Physicians will commonly treat sebaceous carcinoma of the breast with chemical agents such as interferon with retinoids.

Another useful treatment for sebaceous carcinoma of the breast is radiation therapy. However, without the full surgical removal of the carcinoma, these attempts tend not to be that successful. Sometimes doctors initially dismiss the lesion as a mild skin disease. Furthermore, local recurrence is likely to happen within the first five years following treatment. If there is no regional metastasis and no local or regional progression of the disease, then the outlook for breast sebaceous carcinoma is good.

Chemical composition and antioxidant property of holy basil Ocimum sanctum L. As new skin cells are produced, they push older cells toward the skin's surface, where the old cells die and are sloughed off. The process of creating new skin cells is controlled by a basal cell's DNA. The DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do.

The mutation tells the basal cell to multiply rapidly and continue growing when it would normally die. Eventually the accumulating abnormal cells may form a cancerous tumor — the lesion that appears on the skin.

Much of the damage to DNA in basal cells is thought to result from ultraviolet UV radiation found in sunlight and in commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds. But sun exposure doesn't explain skin cancers that develop on skin not ordinarily exposed to sunlight. Other factors can contribute to the risk and development of basal cell carcinoma, and the exact cause may in some cases not be clear. Wear protective clothing.

Stages 0 & 1 - National Breast Cancer Foundation

The stage of cancer indicates the size of the tumor of abnormal cells and whether or not those cells are contained to the place of origin. Stage 0 breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ DCIS is a non-invasive cancer where abnormal cells have been found in the lining of the breast milk duct. In Stage 0 breast cancer, the atypical cells have not spread outside of the ducts or lobules into the surrounding breast tissue.

Lobular carcinoma in situ at Stage 0 generally is not considered cancer. Although it has carcinoma in the name, it really describes a growth of abnormal but non-invasive cells forming in the lobules. Some experts prefer the name lobular neoplasia for this reason because it accurately refers to the abnormal cells without naming them as cancer. LCIS, however, may indicate a woman has an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

In Stage 1 breast cancer, cancer is evident, but it is contained to only the area where the first abnormal cells began to develop. The breast cancer has been detected in the early stages and can be very effectively treated. Stage 1 can be divided into Stage 1A and Stage 1B. The difference is determined by the size of the tumor and the lymph nodes with evidence of cancer.

The tumor is smaller than the approximate size of a peanut 2 centimeters or smaller AND has not spread to the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes have cancer evidence with small clusters of cells between the approximate size of a pinprick to the approximate width of a grain of rice.

Similar to stage 0, breast cancer at this stage is very treatable and survivable. Stage 1 is highly treatable, however, it does require immediate treatment, typically surgery and often radiation, or a combination of the two. Like stage 0, Chemotherapy is often not necessary for earlier stages of cancer. Material on this page courtesy of National Cancer Institute.
