To say the least, there is a very good reason for it which we are going to discuss here today. Check out any bike you wish to ranging from entry level sportsbike to a superbike and you will notice that though the shape and style may vary a bit, but the swingarms for all these bikes are always made in a rectangular box type pattern. And not just that but in case they are made out of tubes, multiple parallel tubes are used to ultimately form something rectangular when put together. Back in the day when Ducati was still using the Bevel Gear drive on their bikes along with the dual suspension setup, they were using tubular steel swingarms, but it did not provide them the kind of handling and performance from their bikes. It was later in the s when the Italian marquee shifted to the mono-suspension setup was when they finally decided to go for the rectangular box type swingarms and though the performance was not affected as much, the handling of the bikes improved drastically.

Hi - just planning the TD3 replica twin shock and would like to get a box section swingarm. A practical way to minimise squat swingijg a chain-drive bike is to locate the final drive sprocket as close as possible to the axis of the swingarm pivot; the ideal solution is to make the final drive sprocket and the swingarm pivot concentric, as was done on the Hesketh V Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous. Drag racing motorcycles swinginh dragbikes will often use longer swingarms awinging keep their center of gravity as forward as possible, which reduces the tendency to wheelie at the start.

Swinger looks great! The rectangular swingarms always have the wider section of the area in a vertical position and the smaller in horizontal position. This is simple to design and inexpensive to make, although alignment and attachment must be precise. Welcome, Guest. Please login or register. Grant Hero Member Posts: Paul, absolutely agree. The swingarm pivot is a known weak point. Also I would think the shock absorbers would benefit from a support on each side, less flex through the mounting bolt.

I am also personally not a fan of massive thick alloy slabs for a swingarm, or eccentric adjusters. This is why I am planning to brace up a standard swinger. The monoshock conversion on POP was needed but in effect braced the standard swinger.

The swingarm pivot was heavily braced too. One last thing, the swingarm axle was increased in diameter from 14 to 16mm. Quote from: Paul LeClair on July 31, , Laverda Jota - SimonR Flickr Photos. Grant wouldn't bracing the stock swing arm make it much too heavy?

It already weighs too much. Just looks the part. Only if you paint it a flashy colour so it stands out. When they adyust bike , stability as it was but turning in corners and shikanes somewhere in direction GP twostroke. Try this you will be happy. Somebody was doing the same thing in Brisbane in about '' I knew a guy who forgot to tighten his rear wheel nut on a '75 or '76 3c and bent the swing arm when the axle came out and the wheel canted sideways. Whoever fixed it did the "bracing strip", don't know what it was supposed to do but at least it was an attempt to make the swing arm a bit less floppy.

A bracing strip should work. I put one on my centre stand after seeing the amount of flex it had. Seems to have stopped it. This is as far as I got with my braced swinger project - an incomplete drawing. I'll get back to it one day Cheers, Cam. Your going around in circles again!

Myself and Lothar have testified to the superior performance of box-section aluminium swinging arms mine had a sub-frame below. I had the same experience as Lothar, fitted the Aluminium swinging arm with no other modifications and WOW what a difference.

Handled like on rails and very responsive to bumps!!!!! Surely as eggs are eggs, adding a load of steel to an already heavy swinging arm will not help that much, especially when considering the extra inertia of that weight. OEM spindle nut to be used. You can replace the arms completely with oval or elliptical tubing with about the same thickness but twice as tall. Check it out! Initial Suspension assembly. Here are some additional views of the braced swing-arm to show the detail.
